For over 76 years, Swiss watchmakers
IWC have been producing extraordinarily robust and reliable timepieces that have always met the requirements of contemporary pilots and aircrews.
IWC's Collection of Pilot’s Watches have a wide range of functions, are made of high-tech materials like ceramic and titanium, and have a dial that offers optimum legibility at all times.
This was the reason
IWC developed the cockpit-style design for its very first Pilot’s Watches. It gave an entire segment of the watch industry its identity and has remained the model for IWC’s professional Pilot’s Watches ever since.
Below are 4 of my personal favourites from the current IWC Pilot's Watch Collection. The hardest part is deciding which one to buy!
The IWC-manufactured 89365 calibre is protected against magnetism by a soft-iron inner case.
The dial references classic cockpit-style design all the way through to the altimeter-like date display.
The central hand shows recorded times in seconds, while the hand in the subdial at "12 o’clock" shows the number of elapsed minutes.
IWC Big Pilot's Watch Top Gun Miramar
With its polished ceramic case, hands and chapter ring in beige, the Top Gun Miramar boasts a green textile strap inspired by the colour and material range typically favoured by the military.
Thanks to the 51111 calibre, the largest manufactured in-house by
IWC, the watch will continue running for a week when fully wound.
The sapphire glass is secured against drops in pressure in the cockpit.
IWC Pilot's Watch Double Chronograph
Colourwise, the double chronograph has the classic instrument look and the date display is reminiscent of an altimeter.
The third push-button at "10 o’clock" can be used to stop the split-seconds hand at any time; pushing it again synchronizes it with the chronograph seconds hand, making it ideal for timing laps or intermediate times.
IWC Spitfire Perpetual Calendar Digital Date-Month
For the first time ever, an
IWC Pilot’s Watch shows the date and month digitally in large numerals, inspired by instruments – like the altimeter – found in the cockpit.
The four-year leap year cycle is also shown digitally.
The dynamic interchange of polished and satin-finished surfaces on the 18-carat red gold case with sapphire-glass back gives the watch its premium-quality look.
